Background

The ZZ plant is the plant for the windowless office and the serial under-waterer. Thick underground rhizomes bank water and energy, so it stays glossy and upright through low light and long droughts that would finish most houseplants.

Glossy, waxy leaflets march up arching stems, and the whole thing grows slowly and predictably. The single rule: when in doubt, don't water. Yellowing lower stems almost always mean overwatering, never thirst. It's hard to find an easier plant — just keep it away from pets and curious children, as the sap is irritating.

Famously tolerant of low light; also fine in medium to bright indirect. Avoid harsh direct sun.
