Background

Peperomia is a huge, easygoing genus of small, semi-succulent plants — from the rippled watermelon peperomia to the ribbed raindrop and the chunky baby rubber plant. They share thick, water-storing leaves, a compact size that suits a shelf or desk, and a forgiving nature that makes them ideal pet-safe houseplants.

Because the leaves hold water, they want far less than they look like they should — let the pot dry down well before watering, and choose a smaller pot, since they prefer to be a bit snug. Bright indirect light keeps the colours and patterns strong without scorching the leaves.

Medium to bright indirect light suits the genus; the thicker-leaved types tolerate lower light.
